Montessori International College - Mobile Learning Pavilion
The Challenge
Whilst the Senior Primary Hub is being temporarily accommodated in hired demountable buildings, the College needs an outdoor learning space for its primary school children to be able to imagine possibilities and create amongst nature. We investigated three options and recommended a mobile solution for this growing school so that it is being smart about providing adaptable resources within an evolving campus. Rather than build a fixed traditional solution for an outdoor learning space, a mobile pavilion innovatively provides for the children's learning needs and optimises possibilities for future campus development. The space is like a compact classroom on wheels, able to be moved around the 22ha college site for special activities or events. It is a multi-purpose space intended to engage the community. For example, it provides a collaborative space for Artist in Residence programs with primary school children and a maker space for the robotics club, or a yoga space for the children’s mindfulness session. The mobile pavilion will be parked adjacent the demountable senior primary hubs with northern aspect and views to the forest and outdoor playscape. On special occasions you will see it roam across the school’s farm or sport’s field. The Design Approach
